Motherboard is the main circuit board of the computer system. It acts like a common communication highway for all other components in the PC. All other components in the computer are either directly plugged into the motherboard or connected to it using its USB ports. Whether it is a component or a peripheral, it communicates with others via motherboard. It is the foundation of the PC and it ties together all the parts like memory, video card, storage, processor and more. If you choose right motherboard when building or upgrading your computer, you won’t have to face any severe problem.

There are different types of motherboards, depending upon the computer. There can be high-quality or low quality motherboard. However, it is not only the motherboard which improves the performance of your PC.

Modern CPUs are not compatible with older generation of motherboards. There are problems like chip features, voltage difference, BIOS support and others. If you are using graphic cards, you need to buy a motherboard which carry chipset required to support them. In fact, type of chipset decides the kind of motherboard you will buy. Check the list of features of a motherboard. It is the chipset which determines the board and memory speed and the expansion capacity.

The motherboards with DDR3 memory are the best performing motherboards. There are two to four memory slots in motherboard, depending upon its type. Also make sure that there is enough space on the motherboard to accommodate all the things you require to be in your PC. In addition, speed of motherboard and speed of memory should match each other. There is size limitation of each memory slot, so do not outdo this maximum size.

Another consideration is the form factor which is determines the dimension and layout of the motherboard. With right form factor, you can have required number of ports, expansion slots and the mounting holes. Select that motherboard which meets all your requirements.

CPU socket is another consideration which needs to be made. The motherboard you are choosing should support the family of processors you opt to use. The motherboards made for Intel CPUs use LGA775 sockets and for AMD CPUs use AM2+. You also need expansion slots for expansion cards and PCI slots for the Ethernet Cards and sound cards. Look for the motherboards with expansion slots. For storage SATA is the standard right now, so your motherboard should support SATA drives.

While buying a motherboard, it is important to assess your requirements. Buy a motherboard which meets all your requirements.
