I’m changing a power supply and I have a hard drive with both a Sata and Legacy plug. Can I use either?
It’s and HP desk top. The current power supply (dead) has 2 sata plugs and one Legacy to Sate adapter. The are 3 drives that require sata. I have an option for a power supply that has only 1 adapter so if I could us the legacy without loosing effectiveness, I’m in good shape. Are there draw backs?
Yes… if the drive has both the newer style SATA power plug and the older 4-pin Molex power plug, you can use either. However, and this is very important, USE ONLY ONE OF THE TWO! Do not plug something into both at the same time. This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people fried these multi-power drives when they first came out by plugging in one of each.
The only drawback is the ability to hot-swap drives. The newer SATA power spec allows for the removal of a hard drive while the computer is still powered on. This is helpful if you have something like a RAID 5 array where a single drive could fail while the RAID array maintains normal operation. You can then replace the bad drive without having to shut off your computer. While common on servers and some custom high-end rigs, this probably isn’t something you are going to do or should be concerned about.
So certainly, go ahead and use the legacy Molex. You won’t have any ill effects from it!
